One Piece Film Red

One Piece Film Red finally opened in theaters across English-speaking countries over the weekend, beating franchise records in the States at least. But we’ll have to wait for official numbers to come from those countries to truly know how well Film Red did. Meanwhile, the official Japanese Twitter account for the film celebrated hitting yet another domestic milestone today with an illustration from series creator Eiichiro Oda himself.

Japanese box office tracker Kogyo Tsushinsha confirmed the news, revealing that as of November 6, One Piece Film Red has brought in 18.04 billion yen (US$129.12 million) on the back of over 13.01 million tickets sold. Film Red continues to inch closer to Howl’s Moving Castle‘s mammoth 19.60 billion yen taking, where the Miyazaki-directed anime film holds the 5th spot on the anime all-time and the 8th spot on the overall film charts in Japan.

With Suzume and Wakanda Forever releasing this weekend, Film Red is set to lose a lot of screens, with a major of them being premium IMAX screens, even though the One Piece film continues to sail along in 1st place in the weekend charts. Let’s see if Luffy and Uta can hold their own against Makoto Shinkai.

One Piece Film Red opened in Japanese theaters on August 6. Crunchyroll released the film in English-speaking countries this November, starting with Australia and New Zealand on November 3 then followed by the United States and Canada on November 4. Crunchyroll describes the seafaring musical adventure as such:

Uta—the most beloved singer in the world whose voice has been described as “otherworldly”—is renowned for concealing her own identity when performing. Now, for the first time ever, she will reveal herself to the world at a live concert.

With the Navy watching closely, the venue fills with Uta’s fans—including excited pirates and the Straw Hats led by Luffy, who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—all eagerly awaiting the voice that the whole world has been waiting for to resound. The story begins with the shocking revelation that she is the enigmatic Shanks’ daughter.

The One Piece TV anime is also still going strong, with over 1,000 episodes of the series streaming right here on Crunchyroll and new episodes coming out each week as they air in Japan.
