Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan: 14 Anime Films Surpassed One Billion Yen Mark in 2022
Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (MPAA) held a New Year’s press conference in Tokyo on January 31 and released data on annual box office revenues for 2022, including three Japanese films that surpassed the 10 billion yen mark. This is the first time in history that three Japanese films have surpassed that milestone.
According to the data released yesterday, the total box office revenue of films screened in Japan last year was 213.111 billion yen (1.617 billion USD), up approximately 32 percent from the previous year, which was the second lowest on record. It is also the first time in three years that the box office has exceeded 200 billion yen since the record high of 261.1 billion yen in 2019.
Japanese films totaled 146.579 billion yen (1.125 billion USD), up more than 14 percent from the previous year. The top three films that topped 10 billion yen were all anime films. Only one foreign film, Top Gun Maverick, exceeded the milestone. 14 anime films earned more than one billion yen in 2022, one more than the previous year.

4. “Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween” – 9.78 billion yen
11. “Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021” – 2.69 billion yen
12. “Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO” – 2.51 billion yen
13. “The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie” – 2.24 billion yen
14. “Crayon Shin-chan: Mononoke Ninja Chinpuden” – 2.04 billion yen
16. “Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love ST☆RISH Tours” – 1.98 billion yen
19. “That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime The Movie: Scarlet Bond” – 1.5 billion yen
21. “Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night” – 1.16 billion yen
23. “Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island” – 1.1 billion yen
25. “Laid-Back Camp Movie” – 1.08 billion yen
26. “Free! the Final Stroke 2nd Part” – 1 billion yen
