Alice to Tres no Maboroshi Kojo

The MAPPA STAGE 2023 event came through with a bunch of fresh news this weekend, including an update on the latest film from director Mari Okada (Maquia – When the Promised Flower Blooms). Originally announced back in June 2021, Alice to Tres no Maboroshi Kojo is now lined up for a September 15 opening in Japan, and the main cast has been revealed along with a teaser trailer.

In addition to Okada writing, directing and providing the original work, the anime film features Tadashi Hiramatsu as assistant director, Yuriko Ishii as character designer and chief animation director, Kazuki Higashiji as art director and Masaru Yokoyama as music composer, with Warner Bros. handling distribution.

The story follows third-year middle schooler Masamune Kikuiri (voiced by Junya Enoki), who lives in an area where a steelworks factory explosion sealed off all of the town’s exits. In an effort to eventually return to normal, the town’s residents are forbidden from changing, so they live their lives in a drab state of stasis. When Masamune’s classmate Atsumi Sagami (Reina Ueda) takes him to the steelworks factory’s blast furnace, they meet a wild girl named Itsumi (Misaki Kuno) who is unable to speak, and this chance meeting combined with the “love impulse” of the boys and girls who are ready for a change begins to upset the world’s balance.

Writer and director Mari Okada is also writing the novel version, which hits stores in Japan on June 13.
