Lonely Castle in the Mirror Film Surpasses One Billion Yen at Japanese Box Office
The official Twitter for the anime film adaptation of Mizuki Tsujimura’s fantasy novel Kagami no Kojou (English edition title: Lonely Castle in the Mirror) has confirmed that the film’s cumulative total domestic gross has finally surpassed the one billion yen (7.78 million USD) mark in two months since its release. It has become the 16th Japanese anime film of 2022 that has reached the milestone.
The Keiichi Hara (Crayon Shin-chan films, Birthday Wonderland)-directed and A-1 Pictures (Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Sword Art Online)-animated film was released in 307 theaters across Japan on December 23, 2022, then ranked sixth in its first weekend. It was very well received by audiences, ranking No.1 on Filmarks’ first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 3.94/5.0 based on 455 reviews. It stayed in the weekend box office top 10 for six consecutive weeks until the last weekend of January.

Director Keiichi Hara arrived in Rotterdam to attend the 52nd International Film Festival Rotterdam (January 25-February 5, 2023), where the film was the first Japanese animation in history to be officially entered in the Limelight section of the festival. The film was screened on February 1.

Synopsis:
A timid, anxious child of aloof parents, Kokoro cannot bring herself to go to school and spends most of her time holed up in her room. One day, a luminous portal opens in her dressing mirror, taking her to a majestic castle on a secluded island where she meets six other middle-schoolers like her. Wolf Queen, the concierge of the island, gives the group a task: find a key hidden in the castle and be granted a wish.
