Rohan at the Louvre

Rohan’s travels worldwide have taken him to some of the most exciting places. His current destination, Paris, has taken him down catacombs of darkness in the latest live-action adaptation of the Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan series of one-shot manga, Rohan at the Louvre. Series creator Hirohiko Araki recreated the cover of the manga for the latest giveaway for the film’s Japanese release.

The image, which will be given out to film attendees from June 2, is based on Issey Takahashi’s portrayal of the character, which he reprises from the NHK TV dramas, also inspired by the series of one-shots.

Thus spoke Kishibe Rohan is a spin-off of Araki’s long-running JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise, focusing on Diamond is Unbreakable character Rohan Kishibe. Its live-action TV drama series starring Issey Takahashi as Rohan has been aired on NHK General TV for three seasons since 2020.

The Rohan at the Louvre film opened in Japan on May 26 to 314 million yen over the first weekend. The original manga, which was released in English from NBM Graphic Novels as part of The Louvre Collection, is described as such:

After Glacial Period and The Sky Over the Louvre comes another completely original story with stunning art by a leading mangaka, bestselling author of ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.’ Rohan, a young mangaka, meets a beautiful mysterious young woman with a dramatic story.

Seeing him draw, she tells him of a cursed 200 year old painting using the blackest ink ever known from a 1000 year old tree the painter had brought down without approval from the Emperor who had him executed for doing so. The painting meanwhile had been saved from destruction by a curator of the Louvre.

Rohan forgets this story as he becomes famous but ten years later, visiting Paris, he takes the occasion to try and locate the painting. Little does he know how violently powerful the curse of it is until he has the museum unearth it from deep within its archival bowels…
