Japan Box Office Top 10: Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia Returns to No.1

In its fourth weekend, Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia, the 42nd anime feature film in the nationally popular Doraemon franchise, earned a very good 392 million yen (3.01 million USD) on 322,000 admissions, successfully taking first place again.

After dominating the Japanese box office for two weeks in a row, the film dropped to third in its third weekend, but the rapid weakening of the momentum of other new releases also helped it regain the top spot. The film’s cumulative total gross has surpassed 2.5 billion yen (19.44 million USD) on 2.11 million admissions.

Last weekend’s No.1 film, the live-action film adaptation of Akumi Agitogi’s fantasy light novel My Happy Marriage ranked second with 262 million yen (2.04 million USD) on 192,000 admissions in its second weekend. The 115-minute film has earned 1.271 billion yen (9.88 million USD) on 949,000 admissions.

Shin Kamen Rider, the latest tokusatsu reboot film project helmed by Hideaki Anno following Shin Godzilla (2016) and Shin Ultraman (2022), was down one position to third in its second weekend, with a cumulative total gross of 1.147 billion yen (8.92 million USD). Its second weekend gross was instantly halved from its opening weekend.

With 159 million yen (1.24 million USD) on 127,000 admissions, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK remained in fourth place, the same as last weekend. The film’s cumulative total domestic gross has reached an impressive 12.4 billion yen (96.42 million USD) on 8.6 million admissions.

GRIDMAN UNIVERSE, Studio Trigger’s new anime feature film featuring characters from SSSS.GRIDMAN and SSSS.DYNAZENON was released in 151 theaters in Japan on March 24, making its fifth place debut. Its screen average (box office per screen) for films released in more than 100 theaters was #1. The 118-minute film also ranked second on Filmarks’ first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 4.4/5.0 based on 726 reviews.

In its eighth weekend, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village- ranked the same eighth place from the previous weekend, bringing its total to 3.82 billion yen (29.7 million USD) .
