Japan Box Office Top 10: Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia Repeats at No.1 Again

The momentum of the cat robot is not slowing down. In its fifth weekend, Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia, the 42nd anime feature film in the nationally popular Doraemon franchise, earned 326 million yen (2.53 million USD) on 286,000 admissions, staying on first place for two consecutive weeks again. The film was No. 1 in its first and second week of release, and continues to be a tenacious box office success in Japan.

The film’s cumulative total gross has almost reached 3.3 billion yen (25.66 million USD) on 2.77 million admissions, already surpassing the total domestic gross of the franchise’s previous 41st film in 2022, Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021 (2.69 billion yen).

Coming in second was the live-action film adaptation of Akumi Agitogi’s fantasy light novel My Happy Marriage, which earned 225 million yen (1.75 million USD) on 149,000 admissions in its third weekend, bringing its total to 1.81 billion yen (14 million USD) on 1.376 million admissions.

Touken Ranbu The Movie – Reimei (Dawn) –, the second live-action film adaptation of Nitroplus and DMM Games’ video game franchise Touken Ranbu, ranked fourth in its opening weekend with 220 million yen (1.72 million USD). The film also ranked sixth on Filmarks’ first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 3.22/5.00 based on 356 reviews.

The first live-action film, Touken Ranbu The Movie, was released in January 2019 and earned 920 million yen (7.15 million USD) from its total domestic run. The second film, produced thanks to the success of the first, is expected to exceed the one billion-yen mark.

Shin Kamen Rider, the latest tokusatsu reboot film project helmed by Hideaki Anno following Shin Godzilla (2016) and Shin Ultraman (2022), was down two positions to fifth in its third weekend, with a cumulative total gross of 1.5 billion yen (11.66 million USD). The reception in the otaku community has been much quieter than for the previous two Shin films, and the final box-office performance may not even reach the two billion yen that was initially predicted when it was released.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK ranked sixth in its 18th weekend. GRIDMAN UNIVERSE, which made its fifth place debut last weekend, dropped to eighth in its second weekend.

Rakudai Majo: Fuka to Yami no Majo, the anime film adaptation of Satoko Narita’s children fantasy novel series, was released in Japan on March 31, but failed to rank in the overall top 10 ranking.
