Japan Box Office: THE FIRST SLAM DUNK Stays on No.1 for Two Consecutive Weekends

After making its sensational first place debut, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK, a new anime feature film adaptation of Takehiko Inoue’s basket ball-themed sports manga in the 1990s, still earned a huge 825 million yen (6 million USD) on 544,000 admissions in its second weekend, which was enough to maintain its No.1 position for two consecutive weeks.

The cumulative total gross of the 124-minute film directed by none other than the manga author himself has already surpassed 3 billion yen (21.78 million USD) on 2.02 million admissions to become the fourth top-grossing Japanese anime film of 2022. The film’s distributor Toei says, “Please keep your eyes on this film toward the year-end box office for even higher numbers! Expectations are high for the film to exceed 10 billion yen at the box office.”

Coming in second was Makoto Shinkai’s latest feature Suzume, which had kept the same position from last weekend. In its fifth weekend, the film earned 575 million yen (4.18 million USD) on 432,000 admissions, which was 23 percent down from the previous weekend. Its total domestic gross has reached 8.59 billion yen (62.38 million USD) to become the 23rd top-grossing Japanese film of all-time.

Crunchyroll will release the film in all major global territories (excluding Asia) in early 2023.
