Japan Box Office: Sword Art Online -Progressive- 2nd Film Makes No.1 Debut with 323 Million Yen

Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night, the latest anime feature film based on Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online light novel series, was released in 240 theaters (including IMAX theaters) in Japan on October 22. The 100-minute film earned 323 million yen (2.17 million USD) on 199,000 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday, which was enough to make its No.1 debut.

The three-day total, including the advance screening held on Friday, exceeded 340 million yen (2.28 million USD) with 208,000 ticket sales. The theater average, which indicates box-office revenue per screen, was 1.35 million yen (9,063 USD).

The second -Progressive- film’s first two-day gross was about 92.5 percent of that of the first film, Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night, which was released in Japan in October 2021 and also ranked No.1 in its debut weekend. The first film’s screen average was 1.5 million yen (10,700 USD).

In addition, the audience has not been very positive about it. The film ranked only fifth on Filmarks’ first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 3.786/5.0 based on 470 reviews.

Meanwhile, One Piece Film Red‘s box office domination finally ended in its 12th weekend and failed to match the record of 12 consecutive weeks at No. 1 set by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, which was released in October 2020. The film earned 141 million yen (946,655 USD) on 104,000 admissions, bringing its total to 17.356 billion yen (116.5 million USD) to become the ninth top-grossing film of all-time in Japan.

The live-action film adaptation of Aoi Hiiragi’s romantic coming of age manga Mimi wo Sumaseba / Whisper of the Heart ranked sixth in its second weekend, two positions down from last weekend. Uta no Prince-sama The Movie: Maji LOVE ST☆RISH TOURS, the second concert film from the Uta no Prince-sama anime franchise, ranked 10th and has stayed in top 10 for eight consecutive weeks.

While finally disappearing from the top 10 in its fifth weekend, the cumulative total box office of Eiga Delicious Party Pretty Cure: Yumemiru Okosama Lunch! (Delicious Party Pretty Cure the Movie: Dreamy Children’s Lunch!) is estimated to reach 750 million yen (5.03 million USD), which is the best record for a PreCure film since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
