Japan Box Office: One Piece Film Red’s Reign Has Lasted Seven Consecutive Weekends

The box office record has continued to be rewritten. One Piece Film Red made a still-impressive 581 million yen (4.04 million USD) on 412,000 admissions in its seventh weekend, keeping its No.1 position for seven consecutive weekends. Thanks to the second edition of “Volume 4000000000,” which was newly distributed as a bonus to theatergoers for free from September 17, its latest weekend gross was up 107 percent from the previous weekend.

The 15th One Piece anime feature film’s cumulative total domestic gross in Japan has reached 14.9 billion yen (103.8 million USD) on 10.72 million admissions. Now it has become the seventh top-grossing Japanese film of all-time, surpassing Makoto Shinkai’s 2019 film Weathering With You (14.19 billion yen).

In its third weekend, Uta no Prince-sama The Movie: Maji LOVE ST☆RISH TOURS, the second concert film from the Uta no Prince-sama anime franchise, still kept the same fourth position from last weekend. Its Sept. 16-18 gross was even 103 percent of the previous weekend. The 65-minute film has so far earned 580 million yen (4.04 million USD) to become the 10th top-grossing Japanese anime film of 2022.

Following its first feature film Penguin Highway in 2018 and second film A Whisker Away in 2020, Studio Colorido’s highly anticipated third film Drifting Home, directed by Penguin Highway director Hiroyasu Ishida, was released in 114 theaters across Japan on Sepetmebr 16. Probably due to the fact that it was also simultaneously streamed worldwide on Netflix, it didn’t rank in the overall top 10. It didn’t get much critical acclaim either, ranking only eighth, the worst among the newly-released films, in Filmarks’ first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 3.205/5.0 based on 2,510 reviews.

On the other hand, the revival screening of the male idol-themed game franchise Ensemble Stars!!’s all-new feature film Ensemble Stars!! -Road to Show!!- ranked third in Kogyo Tsushinsha’s mini-theater weekend box office ranking. The film has been screened in select 10 theaters in Japan for a limited time of one week in commemoration of the release of its DVD/Blu-ray.
