Goodbye, Eri, Akane-banashi and Others Nominated for 16th Manga Taisho Awards

Goodbye, Eri

The coveted Manga Taisho awards have revealed its 11 nominees for its 16th year, giving a great round-up of the year’s biggest manga as picked by booksellers across Japan. The winner will be announced in mid to late March at an award ceremony at Nippon Broadcasting’s Imagine Studio.

Unlike most awards, the Manga Taisho are picked by mostly booksellers in Japan based on what they would recommend to readers. The nominees are picked by a selection of 102 judges picking up to five books to put forward and from those, 11 manga were nominated. Only manga published in 2022 with fewer than 8 volumes that haven’t won before are eligible to be nominated.

Here are those 11 manga series:

  • Akane-banashi, written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue
  • Onna no Sono no Hoshi, by Yama Wayama
  • Gekikou Kamen by Takayuki Yamaguchi
  • Draw This, Then Die!, by Minoru Totoda
  • Goodbye, Eri, by Tatsuki Fujimoto
  • Super no Ura de Yani Su Futari, by Jinushi
  • You and I Are Polar Opposites, by Kocha Agasawa
  • Takopi’s Original Sin, by Taizan 5
  • A Witch’s Life in Mongol, by Tomato Soup
  • Nippon Sangoku, by Ikka Matsuki
  • The Summer Hikaru Died, by Mokumokuren

The winners will then be picked by the mostly bookseller judges after they have read all the nominees, selecting their top three favorites from the list. Once the results are tallied, the top book becomes the 2023 winner.

Last year saw Shun Umezawa’s The Darwin Incident win the 15th Manga Taiso with Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back coming in second place. Could this be the year that Fujimoto finally wins, or will another series rise above the ranks?
