FEATURE: The Perfect Anime Besties to Spend Galentine’s Day With

Tomo-chan Is a Girl!

What? You haven’t heard of Galentine’s Day? First appearing in the sitcom Parks & Recreation, Galentine’s Day is the day before Valentine’s Day, February 13. It’s a chance to get together with your best girl friends, treat yourselves to yummy food and drinks and generally just celebrate everything about each other. It’s a day for joy and sweetness. What’s not to love?

Galentine’s Day is also a perfect opportunity to honor some of our favorite gals, including the characters we’ve met in recent anime series. Let’s pretend we’re making plans to hang out with some of our anime besties on February 13. You might even find a new series to love in our list of who we want to spend time with on Galentine’s Day!

Tomo Aizawa and Misuzu Gundo (Tomo-chan Is a Girl!)

Galentine’s Day hangout: Singing karaoke

Tomo-chan is the gal pal you’ve always wanted. She’s friendly, outgoing and clueless in pretty much all things related to romance. She might seem too intimidating to approach at first, but she welcomes anyone and everyone who wants to be her friend. Once Tomo is on your side, she’ll fearlessly defend you — with a high-flying karate kick.

Her quiet best friend Misuzu is her polar opposite, but she’s just as fierce of a friend. Misuzu is crafty and shrewd. She uses her scheming to help sweet Tomo in her quest to make Junichiro see her as a solid love interest instead of someone you constantly fist bump. As the first episode title says to mirror Tomo’s frustration, “I Want to Be Seen as a Girl!”

Tomo and Mizusu are the childhood BFFs that you absolutely want to hang out with. They’ll never make you feel like a third wheel. Go with them to sing karaoke and you’ll get to hear Tomo bust out the only tunes she knows: children’s songs. Could Galentine’s Day get any cuter?

Kessoku Band (BOCCHI THE ROCK!)

Galentine’s Day hangout: Movie night at Bocchi’s house

Nijika, Ryo, Kita and Bocchi are Kessoku Band! The four high schoolers write and play original rock songs so catchy that you’ll become a fan the moment you hear them play. Guitarist Bocchi struggles with intense social anxiety, but her thoughtful friends accept her for who she is; they never get annoyed or impatient with her. Bocchi works hard to overcome her fears to make sure her friends are happy. These four friends are girls you’d be lucky to know.

If Bocchi invites you and the band to her house on Galentine’s Day, prepare for a visit to remember! Not only will she decorate her room with colorful disco lights and glow sticks, but you’ll also want to put on a party hat yourself when you see her get-up. The best part? Bocchi’s parents will make mouth-watering snacks just in time to start a movie.

Marin Kitagawa (My Dress-Up Darling)

Marin from My Dress-Up Darling

Galentine’s Day hangout: Burgers at the beach

Marin Kitagawa is the epitome of a free spirit. She’s also extremely extroverted and easy to talk to, especially if you’re chatting about video games, cosplay or photography. She’s also super spontaneous, so don’t be surprised if your Galentine’s Day plans together are spur of the moment.

Hanging out with Marin is always a fun time whether it’s Galentine’s Day or not. The excitable cosplayer loves a good hamburger. Grab some grub and get ready to go on an adventure! If Marin takes you to the beach, be sure to guard your fries from jealous seagulls. And don’t forget your towel, because she’s definitely going to ask you to jump in the water with her — yes, in February. I told you she’s impulsive!

Yor Forger (SPY x FAMILY)

Galentine’s Day hangout: Anything but a tennis match

Yor Forger is one of the sweetest women in anime. She works hard every day at her office job, does her best as Anya’s mama and supports her husband Loid in any way she can. She also puts her all into her other job: an assassin for hire!

Yor might seem gentle and demure but she’s stronger than she looks. Much, much stronger. She can kick a bad guy straight into the ceiling or effortlessly slice a ball into tiny pieces with a tennis racket. Yor defends her loved ones with surprising ferocity. She’s absolutely someone you want on your side.

She also loves a nice glass of wine, which is a perfect way to spend the evening together on Galentine’s Day, especially when paired with a delicious dinner. That said, I don’t recommend agreeing to a home-cooked meal for your Galentine’s Day hangout. Sorry, Yor!

Himeno and Kobeni (Chainsaw Man)

Galentine’s Day hangout: Drinks and appetizers at a bar

Devil hunters know they’re not destined to grow old so they know how to live it up in the here and now — especially Himeno and Kobeni. Hunters in the Public Safety department, Himeno and Kobeni have seen more than their fair share of horrors, so they absolutely appreciate the quiet and mundane moments in life. That includes a cold drink and sizzling fried chicken.

If fried chicken and beer sound like your best night out in ages, join Himeno and Kobeni at a cozy izakaya on Galentine’s Day. You’ll enjoy the food and drinks and are guaranteed to hear some incredible (and potentially gross) stories. Maybe watch out for how much Himeno is drinking as the night progresses.

Also? Power is absolutely not invited.
