FEATURE: Alicia Keys Channels Beerus & Megan Thee Stallion Meets Mirko This Halloween

Mirko in My Hero Academia

Happy “Go get that clearance candy while it lasts!” Day, everyone! Halloween may be over, but I for one still have my spooky welcome mat at the door. I’m also still in awe over the costumes being shared on social media.

Halloween is always the time of year when celebrities step out as some of the most iconic characters in fiction. Among the elaborate costumes, we occasionally get a few who reveal or celebrate their passion for anime. As a Black girl who’s been into anime for decades, my heart soars whenever I see others in the Black community show off their love for anime. This year was no exception as two superstars took inspiration from two of my favorite series: My Hero Academia and Dragon Ball Super. The Black Girl Magic was real this Halloween!

What’s up, doc? It’s MIRKO THEE STALLION

We’ve spoken to Megan Thee Stallion before about her love for anime. At this point, it’s not a matter of if she’s going to dress up as one of my faves, but when. This Halloween she decided to tackle My Hero Academia once again (that Todoroki look continues to live rent-free in my head) by embodying everyone’s favorite muscled bun, Mirko.

Now’s a good time to be a Mirko fan as she’s been given a chance to shine in this latest season. Megan Thee Stallion absolutely nails her vibe, striking some seriously heroic poses and looking ready to take on a gang of High-End Nomu. That evil doctor better watch out for the No. 5 Hero!

This God of Destruction is on FIRE

Like son, like mother, in the case of Alicia Keys. The singer/songwriter/pianist rocked her inner dragon by dressing as the God of Destruction, Beerus. Instead of putting on a pair of cat ears and a tail to emulate the god, Keys got creative and used her hair. Beerus probably would’ve eaten a big bowl of ramen instead.

While I’m not sure what her son’s costume was this year, I’m assuming it was also anime-related (or, at the very least, he helped mom out with this look). That’s because he’s a big anime fan himself. How big? Try performing a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure tune in front of 17,000 people in the middle of your mom’s concert. According to an Instagram post from Keys back in June, “This guy gets on the stage as if there wasn’t 17,000 people out there and just smashes!! All confidence, all smiles, all natural!!! Wow! I’m blown away!!” JoJo pose indeed!

What have been some of your favorite Halloween costumes this year? Did you dress up? Are your decorations still up the way mine are? Let us know in the comments!
