Evangelion Opening Theme Tops Japan’s Karaoke Ranking for 30 Years
In commemoration of its 30th anniversary this year, Nagoya-based company XING announced the “JOYSOUND Karaoke 30th Anniversary Ranking” based on the number of songs sung over the 30-year period from 1992 to 2022, when the company’s JOYSOUND online karaoke service was first introduced.

No surprise, the most popular song over the last three decades is “Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis / A Cruel Angel’s Thesis,” the opening theme for the 1995-1996 TV anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, originally sung by Yoko Takahashi. The iconic song won first place not only in the ranking of anime songs, but also in the overall ranking, which included songs from all genres other than anime songs. It was previously chosen by JOYSOUND as the most popular karaoke song in the Heisei era (1992-2019) as well.
