Evangelion Opening Theme Takes No. 1 Spot Again in Japan’s 2022 Karaoke Ranking

Japanese karaoke company Daiichikosho conducted the annual karaoke ranking survey on its karaoke on-demand service, DAM (Daiichikosho Amusement Multimedia), for 2022. The most popular song in its anime song category was, as expected, “Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis / A Cruel Angel’s Thesis,” the opening theme for the 1995-1996 TV anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, originally sung by Yoko Takahashi.

Although the song was released 27 years ago in 1995, it has maintained strong popularity in Japan, and was ranked number one in JOYSOUND’s karaoke rankings for the 30 years from 1992 to 2022.

Message from Yoko Takahashi:

First of all, I am keenly aware that it is because the work “Evangelion” and this song are wonderful. I also think that the difficulty and dynamism of the lyrics of this song gives the person who grabs the microphone at karaoke a sense of accomplishment like, “I’ve sung it all!” I believe being able to sing this song is a gift from heaven. I will do my best so that as many people as possible will listen to this song. Thank you for loving, listening to, and singing this song over the past 27 years. Although the world is still in chaos, I believe that “there is no dawn without a night,” and I will be happy if I can continue to sing together.
