Detective Conan 26th Feature Film Breaks Opening Weekend Record of The Series
The official Twitter for the Detective Conan anime film series announced today that its latest 26th feature film Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine earned an impressive 3,146,387,340 yen (23.48 million USD) on 2,176,407 admissions in its three-day opening weekend, both of which were the highest in the anime franchise’s 27-year history.
Only in one weekend, it has become the third top-grossing Japanese animation film of 2023, behind only Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village- (4.06 billion yen) and Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia (3.83 billion yen)

The 109-minute film was released in Japan on April 14 and earned 850 million yen (6.35 million USD) on 580,000 admissions on its first day, which was also the highest in the film series. The first three-day gross was a huge 164 percent of that of the film series’ highest grossing film to date, The Bride of Halloween in 2022. Toho, the film’s distributor, said that the audience satisfaction rate exceeded an astonishing 98 percent.

The film’s official website introduces the story as below:
This time’s location is set in the sea near the Hachijo-jima island, Tokyo. Engineers from around the world have gathered for the full-scale operation of “Pacific Buoy,” an offshore facility to connect security cameras owned by the worldwide police forces. A test of a certain “new technology” based on a face recognition system is underway there.
Meanwhile, Conan and the Detective Boys visit Hachijo-jima at Sonoko’s invitation and receive a phone call from Subaru Okiya (a graduate student in the Graduate School of Engineering at Tokyo Metropolitan University, who is an FBI agent Shuichi Akai and a black-robed organization’s Rye) informing them that a Europol employee was murdered in Germany by the Black Organization’s Jin.
Conan, who is disquieted, sneaks into the facility and finds that a female engineer has been kidnapped by the Black Organization…! Furthermore, a USB drive containing certain information in her possession ends up in the hands of the organization… A black shadow also creeps up on Ai Haibara (Detective Boys’ Ai Haibara / Shiho Miyano / the Black Organization’s Shelly)…
