Ayumu Murase Shares His Thoughts on Cure Wing in Soaring Sky! Precure

As its title suggests, Cure Wing, the third Precure following Cure Sky and Cure Prism, is confirmed to appear in the next ninth episode of Soaring Sky! Precure, “Wings Of Courage, Fly Cure Wing!!” to be aired in Japan on April 2. Ayumu Murase (Shoyo Hinata in Haikyu!!, Iruma Suzuki in Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun), who voices the first regular male Precure, shares his thoughts on his character with the Japanese media.

The first official male Precure in the 20-year-old franchise was Cure Infini (CV: Toshiyuki Someya), who appeared in the 42nd episode of the 15th installment Hugtto! Precure (2018-2019), but Cure Wing will be the first male Precure to appear as a main regular character.

In the latest eighth episode “The Flightless Bird and the Strange Boy” on Sunday, Murase made his first voice appearance as Tsubasa (means wing in Japanese), a member of the Puni Bird Tribe in Skyland, who has been studying aerodynamics for flying since he came to Sorashido City. The next episode’s preview suggests he will transform into Cure Wing.

Q: How did you feel when you were chosen to play the role of Cure Wing and how enthusiastic were you?

I was overflowing with joy! From the time I auditioned, I was impressed not only by the history and achievements of the Precure series, but above all by the passionate, straightforward attitude of the producers, director, and staff members involved, who said, “We want to create something fun like this!” I strongly felt “This will definitely be something interesting! I wanted to be a part of it!” so I was thrilled to have passed the audition.

Q: Your first Impressions of Tsubasa Yuunagi?

He is an admirable and somewhat self-sacrificing boy who has never given up on his one dream of “flying” and continues to work hard to achieve it. He may be a bit shy, but I felt that he is a very straight and kind-hearted boy. I hope you will look forward to seeing how he changes when he meets Sora and her friends!

Q: What are the charms and memories of the Precure series?

My first encounter with the Precure series was with Go! Princess Precure, in which I played the prince in episode 47. At the time, I was also struck by the earnestness of Cure Flora, played by (Yu) Shimamura-san, and her wonderful lines with confident, but when I was asked to audition this time, I watched the show from the first episode to the last again, and was able to experience the charm of the Precure world even more.

We actors too are often confronted with the question of what a “dream” is. Although there is a sense of joy and accomplishment in being given the opportunity to voice a character as a “voice actor,” there are times when I wonder what I am aiming for and what dream I strive for, and I myself feel that in a sense it is difficult to come to a concrete conclusion on the answer to these questions.

In the midst of such questions, the scene where Cure Flora says “This is different!” and its persuasive power. I believe (as a viewer) that this line was the result of the blossoming of her own sense of values through her daily efforts, and her growth as Haruka really stuck out to me as an actor. I am sure that Haruka would not have been able to say that line if she had not continued her efforts. Haruka’s line gave me a lot of courage. Regardless of age or life stage, anyone can enjoy watching this series, and adults in particular will be made to think deeply. I feel that such narrative and passion are very wonderful!

Q: A message to the viewers?

Just like Cure Flora for me, there must be a Precure for all of you who pushes you, supports you, and encourages you. With a sense of responsibility and proud to be one of such wonderful Precures. Hopefully, Cure Wing can be a source of courage and inspiration to someone else, and I enjoy and encourage myself every day. Please continue to support ‘”Soaring! Sky Precure!”

The memorial 20th series Soaring Sky! Precure premiered in Japan on February 5, 2023, and has also been simulcast on Crunchyroll for members in North America, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa.
