Neo-Tokyo is about to EXPLODE… with Akira cels!
If you’re in Tokyo in August, one event you can’t miss is the Akira Cel Exhibition, featuring actual cels from the 1988 classic directed by Katsuhiro Otomo.
That exhibition, which ties in with the Otomo Complete Works books that’ve been coming out since last year, will run from August 10 to 31 at Mixalive Tokyo in Ikebukuro. Two pieces of key art for the exhibition were released today.
Apparently some of the cels on display were recently found by Otomo in his house.
Good stuff! Of course, the largest holder of Akira cels in the world is probably the Margaret Herrick Library in Los Angeles following a donation by collector Joe Peacock. Still, seeing a bunch of original Akira cels in Neo-Tokyo itself will be an experience indeed.
Here’s how Funi/Crunchi describes Akira:
In the future, Shotaro Kaneda and his motorcycle gang tear through Neo Tokyo, a city divided by growing tensions. But when caught in an accident, Kaneda’s friend Tetsuo Shima discovers a secret government project and receives psychic abilities beyond his control.
